In addition to helping the teachers of San Ramon Valley High School, I am also doing my best to help the parents and students understand technology in education. Part of this process is to make sure that both parties understand how Digital Citizenship is a major part of our lives. To get the message out to the community and students, I have developed a Digital Citizenship presentation that I present to the parents and students every school year. The presentation that I give is attended by the entire student body (2000 students) over 4 assemblies, the parent presentation is given as a lunch time meeting and an evening meeting that is open to all parents. Generally we get about 20-30 parents in attendance at the lunchtime meeting and about 100 parents for the evening event. The topics range from Digital Footprints, suggestions to help families monitor student computer use at home, and how to make decision on what to post online. These are major issues for our school since we became a 1 to 1 school in the Fall of 2016. This is a link to the slides I use in my presentation and links to other websites that have resources available to the public.

This year I am also working with our district Technology department to work on our school becoming a "Certified School in Digital Citizenship" by the company Common Sense Media. In order to obtain the certification, the school must either; teach 2 grade levels at least 3, 45 minute lessons, or teach 3 grade levels at least 2, 45 minute lessons on Digital Citizenship. So far we have used the presentation above to satisfy one of the presentations to 3 grade levels. We are working with our Social Studies teachers to develop curriculum for lessons in their classes as well. This certification means that our school is working together to educate students in all grades on the importance of Digital Citizenship.
Standards Addressed: 5a, 5b ,5c
